ANKARA -- Turkish Customs and Trade Minister Nurettin Canikli said Sunday his government would increase number of border gates with Iraq from one to four despite threats posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL).
Increasing the number of gates aims at honoring growing demands from Turkey and Iraq to boost trade exchange, Canikli was quoted by the Anadolu news agency as saying, noting that Habur Gate was the only one open now.
The minister said work has begun towards the opening of Uzumlu Gate, while the Derecik and Ovakoy gates would be opened in near future.
Canikli said 1.6 million trucks were using the Habur border crossing every year and were not covering the aspired trade value althrough Turkey was achieving USD 12 billion every year.
Turkey, he added, was building a third bridge at the Habur Gate to increase the number of trucks to 4,000 daily.
Canikli said the Gulu Coz border gate with Syria was used for exports only, while imports from Syria were halted. (end) rs.bs
