NOIDA: At least five people were reported to be dead, while several others seriously injured in a car crash on the Yamuna Expressway on Wednesday morning when 30 cars piled up after dense fog reduced visibility on the high-speed corridor.
The incident took place around 10am on the carriageway towards Greater Noida when the visibility was almost nil, ranging between 50 metres to 100 metres. Several cars were also severely damaged in the crash.
Traffic was also halted for a brief period on the expressway, before the police officials cleared the way. Yamuna Expressway, a strategic highway connecting Noida to Agra is counted among the accident prone areas, especially during the winters.
As the cold wave has tightened its grip over the plains, North India has been witnessing dense to very dense fog for the past few days, disrupting normal life. Rail, road and air traffic have been severely impacted due to the poor visibility conditions. According to Skymet, dense fog will continue to engulf the region in the coming days as well.
