New Delhi: On the birth anniversary of freedom fighter and educationalist Abul Kalam Azad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tributes.
Using his micro-blogging account on Twitter, Modi stated, "Scholar, freedom fighter and a man who devoted his life towards nation building, I salute Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on his birth anniversary.”
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who became the first education minister, was a scholar and senior leader of the Indian independence movement. He promoted the cause of Hindu Muslim unity as well as secularism and socialism.
His contribution to laying the foundation of education in independent India is recognized by celebrating his birthday as "National Education Day" across India.
Narendra Modi has today commenced his 10-day foreign tour.
