LONDON — Airspace over London was closed for what officials said would be hours following a computer failure. Eurocontrol, the international organization overseeing air traffic control in Europe, said at 3:30 p.m. local time (10:30 a.m. ET) that no air traffic would be accepted over the British capital's airspace until 7 p.m. (2 p.m. ET).
A Heathrow Airport spokesman said: "There is a technical problem at the NATS control centre in Swanwick, which is affecting UK airspace. Flights are currently experiencing delays and we will update passengers as soon as we have more information."
Manchester airport in northern England said it was unaffected by the airspace closure and was ready to accept diverted flights.
