University students in Burkina Faso have called for a swift and peaceful transition to civilian rule.
They were at the forefront of demonstrations that toppled President Blaise Compaore after 27 years in power.
Student leader Serge Bayala warned students would take to the streets again if they didn’t see quick changes.
“If the transitional government forgets the aspirations of the young people who went out on to the streets, and if the transitional government doesn’t deliver, all the youth will be back on the streets,” Bayala said.
Compaore was forced to go after angry protests at his attempts to change the constitution to stay in power. Themilitary then took over.
The presidents of Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal have urged the military rulers to appoint a civilian interim leader.
Ghana’s president, John Dramani Mahama, spoke as part of a delegation from The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS.)
“You’ll continue until all of you identify the person of this country who has the stature, respect, honesty, patriotism and nationalism to be able to lead Burkina Faso for the next one year into free, fair, just and credible elections. That is what we want you to achieve,” he said.
All sides have agreed that the transition should last one year and elections should be held in November 2015.
